Our Little Kwilena Playgroup provides a warm and inviting atmosphere for Aboriginal families, where little ones can explore, learn, and both children and adults have the opportunity to connect with others.

What is Little Kwilena Playgroup?

In a supportive environment, caregivers, Aboriginal Families as First Educators (AFaFE) facilitators and the Family Liaison Officer encourage children from birth up to 5 years old to express themselves freely, ask questions, and discover the world around them, laying the foundation for lifelong learning and growth.

Where and When is Little Kwilena Playgroup?

Little Kwilena Playgroup takes place every Wednesday and Thursday during the school term between 9.30am and 11.30am.

We have a designated early childhood area on campus which includes the Little Kwilena Playgroup classroom and playground.

Through engaging activities and guided play, children with their caregivers develop essential social skills, confidence, and a love for learning.

Follow Little Kwilena Playgroup on Facebook to learn about upcoming special events such as excursions to Bunnings.

What is the Aboriginal Families as First Educators Program?

Since 2015, Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has been offering the Aboriginal Families as First Educators program (AFaFE).

The AFaFE program focus is on:

  • Strengthening the connections between Aboriginal families, communities and the school.
  • Improve children’s school readiness and increase parental / carer engagement in their learning.

Engaging families with school early have been shown to impact positively on school readiness, attendance, engagement and life outcomes for children.

Our qualified educators incorporate the Australian Abecedarian Approach (3A) into the AFaFE program.

Did you know we also offer Pre Kindy for children aged 3 years and Kindergarten for 4 year olds?

Pre Kindy is filling fast and we are receiving enrolments up to three years ahead of when students are due to commence schooling.

Therefore we suggest you enrol your child in advance for Pre Kindy and Kindergarten to avoid the disappointment of missing out on a placement.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with us – we would love to hear from you.

Please contact the school on 08 9583 8500 or email our team will be in touch to assist you with the enrolment process.

STORIES FROM OUR AFaFE COMMUNITY

“Our playgroup has received a lot of positive feedback and comments on what a great job we are doing in our community, supporting sustainable long-term change for the health and wellbeing of our children into the future.”

“After mum and baby started attending our playgroup I learnt more about the whole family. Including dad who is a wonderful artist creating beautiful paintings. We invited him to be a part of our NAIDOC Celebrations. Through this program we have been able to successfully engage with the entire family who now confidently come on the school grounds.”

“We are grateful to see playgroup families enrolling their children in kindy the next year. This has happened because the families are now familiar with the school and school community and staff. They were not thinking of enrolling their children into a Catholic school until they had this playgroup experience.”

“As a result of playgroup, one of the mums has taken the offer to train to be relief staff for the playgroup. Her children see her participating in the school and being an important contributor. She is not only seen as a loving mother to her children but also as a good role model by students, staff and other families.”
